Center for Racehorse Retraining

A nonprofit organization

Center for Racehorse Retraining is a sanctuary organization for Thoroughbreds who are unable to pursue second careers due to injury, behavior or other reasons. CRR has a unique semi-feral environment located on 2,500 acres in rural Wyoming. The retirees live on this semi-feral ranch as horses in a natural setting. Every horse is under the watchful eye of the organization, however, should any needs arise. With the additional expertise of regular vet visits and oversight, barefoot trims and monitoring of hoof health, and daily welfare checks, the horses receive high quality care while still being left to live in a natural environment. As part of CRR's mission, observational research is being performed with an emphasis on behavior and movement, hoof health, and body condition. CRR is working on several research partnerships, as well, in order to grow into a high quality retirement research sanctuary. The goal with research is to observe and document how the Thoroughbreds adapt to a semi-feral environment so that it might inform rehabilitation practices and improve equine welfare. So far, profound improvements in hoof health, behavior, and body condition have been observed. With the help of donors, CRR strives to continue to offer high quality retirement care and research.

Mission

To provide an outlet for Thoroughbreds that are not capable of second careers due to injury, behavior, or other reasons. To educate the general public and potential adopters about the benefits of off the track Thoroughbreds going into second careers when possible and retirement and rehabilitation options when necessary. To conduct research focused on the health and wellbeing of Thoroughbreds kept on large acreage.
