CANTER Michigan provides rehabilitation, retraining and adoption for retiring Thoroughbreds that are non-competitive on the racetrack or suffer racing-career-ending injuries. CANTER Michigan is 100% Volunteer led organization, all donations go to the care, boarding, training, farrier and medical needs of our horses.
One of CANTER Michigan’s biggest strengths is the surgery program through its partnership with the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine (MSU CVM). This partnership not only provides life-saving surgeries to injured Thoroughbreds but also allows veterinary students to assist with medical procedures, offering them invaluable advanced education opportunities. Students assist with diagnosis, operation preparation, anesthesia, arthroscopic surgery, recovery and post-surgery care. Injuries may involve arthroscopic removal of bone chips from joints or repairing leg fractures by placing screws while the horse is standing or laying on an operating table.
CANTER Michigan provides rehabilitation, retraining and adoption for retiring Thoroughbreds that are non-competitive on the racetrack or suffer racing-career-ending injuries. CANTER Michigan pays for life-saving surgeries to repair injuries at Michigan State University and provides veterinary and farrier care, rehabilitation, retraining for new careers, marketing and adoption into CANTER-approved homes.
