Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program Inc

Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program, Inc. (FLTAP) is entering it's 20th year and we have assisted over 1,000 retired Thoroughbreds find their forever homes or a new career.  FLTAP is the only adoption program located physically on the grounds of a racetrack in North America (Finger Lakes Racetrack in Farmington, NY).  Our Board of Directors is made up of Finger Lakes track management and Finger Lakes Horsemen, which is a first for the racing industry - our main goal is the welfare of retired Thoroughbreds that have either trained or raced at Finger Lakes Racetrack.  

The Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program, Inc. came into existence when two of our trainers were unable to locate 2 horses that had been rehomed.  A conversation began between management and horsemen about the welfare of these athletes after their racing career is over.  The Purple Haze Center barn and adoption program began with those conversations.  Our Barn has 16 stalls, an indoor arena and 8 paddocks for turn out.  We are open to the public 5 days per week year round and the horses awaiting adoption love all the attention they receive from the public.  Our mascot, Earl (donkey) is very helpful with new horses coming into the program and hanging with them as a buddy - he is also a drama queen and would not forgive us if we didn't mention him and you can find his picture in our media gallery along with other fun barn pictures of our horses.  We have a trainer at the Purple Haze Center barn who is very keen on being able to put the right horse with the right person and is available to all adopters for assistance with their new partner.

We follow each horse that is adopted for 1 year, with 3, 6 and 12 month check ups with photos.  After the 12th month, the horse belongs to the adopter but will always have a home at FLTAP should their circumstances change for any reason.  Our adopters tend to remain in volved with the program and love to post updates on their new partner on our Facebook page (facebook.com/FLTAPAdoption).  

Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program, Inc. is accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance since 2014.  This is a rigorous application process every two years and covers all aspects of our business from insurance, financial responsibility to the care of our horses. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance inspects our facility annually and with quarterly documentation and annual veterinary documentation to remain accredited.
