New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program has a long history of transitioning retiring racehorses into second careers when their days on the track come to an end. Since 1992, we’ve focused on the rehabilitation, retraining, and ultimately rehoming of these horses to qualified and loving adopters.
Some of the horses we serve are sound but just too slow to be competitive on the track. Others have sustained injuries that need time to heal, and some just need R&R from the lifestyle of being a racing athlete. They all face a common reality: Without training beyond what they’ve learned for racing, a good future isn’t guaranteed.
That’s where we — and you — come in! Since we started in 1992, we’ve transitioned more than 9,000 retired Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses from more than 70 different racetracks into second careers with experienced, educated, and appropriate adopters throughout the country.
We retrain and rehome Thoroughbreds from our main base in Lexington, KY; Medina, OH; Hummelstown, PA; Covington, LA; and Ocala, FL. We focus on Standardbreds from two Ohio locations — New Carlisle, and Richwood — and we have both Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds at our Gansevoort, NY, facility.
New Vocations is accredited by both the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the Standardbred Transition Alliance.
New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its tax identification number is 31-1681380. In 2022 it earned a Platinum Seal of Transparency with Candid.
Founded in 1992, New Vocations has grown into the largest racehorse adoption program in the country. Its mission to rehabilitate, retrain and rehome retired racehorses has led to the placement of over 10,00 retiring Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds into experienced, loving homes over the past 34 years. With nine facilities in six states, New Vocations works directly with racing owners and trainers seeking aftercare options to serve more than 600 retiring racehorses each year.
